When I first arrived at Loc Ninh our only source of water was from a well in the old camp, about a quarter of a mile away. We had a water tanker truck that would run down to the old camp and then return to our current camp. We would fill up water cans all day long. For the inner compound we had 5 5 gallon drums welded together three high and four wide to hold our water for drinking, cooking, and showering. Into each truckload of water, the driver would add enough chlorine to choke a horse. It killed every living organism and tasted really bad.
One time someone got a âcare packageâ from home with Kool-Aid and that seemed to help a little. I drank coffee with lots of sugar, which also helped to cut the foul taste. I never drank coffee before Vietnam, but after being in-country for a while I learned to like it. And eventually, even the regular water didnât taste too bad. My taste buds either adapted or had maybe died off from the chlorine. After we got a well dug in the camp, following the August 1968 siege, the water did not need as much chlorine and was somewhat better.
Anytime you went on a patrol you carried a couple canteens full of water. I always filled my canteens and froze them the night before an operation so I would have ice cold water for the first day out: a special treat on that initial day. When you were out in the field for three to five days there were no re-supplies unless it was an emergency ammo re-supply. You had to live off the land and obtain your own water, which meant filling up your canteens at a stream and dropping in a couple water purification tablets. They made the water taste like shit but it was better than having the real shits for a week afterwards if you didnât use them.
